Random Act of Vineness

advertisement

Wow. I am truly honored to join the other Newsviners who have been selected for our site's highest form of recognition and highest honor, the Random Act of Vineness award.

And thank you to those who took the time to nominate me as well as to those who took the time to write and post positive comments throughout Newsvine.

We are all honored by our recent Society of Professional Journalists award as we find ourselves in the same virtual newsroom, writing what we want as we work our individual "beats."

We are all pioneering a news media prototype.

We are all evolving a news media hybrid.

The news business has become the business of news. It is up to us to work from ground zero and provide stories without advertising influence or editorial compromise.

This is a huge responsibility and is one that we all share.

One of the questions people ask me is "How did you get into this Shriners thing?" When Vernon Hill, Shriners whistleblower, got a hold of me, I already had three years watchdog experience investigating another non profit group. From March 2003 to March 2006, I investigated the non profit claims of the International Remote Viewing Association (IRVA) and began learning more about the laws and regulations governing non profit groups than I ever wanted.

The whole story will soon be available in e-book form.

So, when Vernon Hill got a hold of me about 30 days after IRVA posted their compliance documents, I checked him out, found his claims were true and hit the deck running.

Both cases began when IRVA and the Shriners failed to answer questions and provide financial documentation. Non profit law comes down from the IRS and they have strict disclosure regulations. And in both cases, those asking the questions were retaliated against.

So if these groups are examples of non profits gone wrong, how does a compliant non profit operate?

The Nature Conservancy is a model of non profit compliance. They embrace disclosure, transparency and accountability as well as new standards of governance, but only after a Washington Post investigation and Congressional hearings.

If you go to their website and go through their site map, you'll find their:

Tax returns

Bylaws and articles of incorporation

Annual reports

Financial reports

Conflict of interest policy

Governance guidelines

Standard operating procedure

Whistleblower policy

IRS sanctioning documents.

If you go to the Shriners' website , you will find no such thing. In fact, last April, the Shriner Treasurers Meeting minutes were pulled offline. These minutes were the source documents for "Former Exec-VP Knew of Crimes, Shriners: Part 9," "Above the law? Shriner Treasurers' Minutes, Part 10" and "Treasurers Meeting Minutes Vanish, Part 15."

If a non profit group has nothing to hide, online documents should not disappear.

Twenty years ago, the Orlando Sentinel dug into allegations of theft and that the crippled and burned children were used to raise money that was misspent on parties and good times. This investigation also found incestuous relationships between local government officials and law enforcement officers who had turned their heads the other way instead of investigating complaints of circus ticket theft.

They were also Shriners.

In closing, I'd like to emphasize that this investigation is not about the Shriners who have donated decades of hard work as they support the hospitals that provide free care to sick and crippled children.

This investigation is for those who helplessly watch as what they worked so hard to build is all but stolen from them.

This investigation is about those whistleblowers who watch as millions of dollars raised in the name of the sick and crippled children either disappears or is misspent on things like partying, mortgages, and lavish ceremonies.

This investigation gives voice to those who have been silenced, sued and retaliated against.

This investigation is about non profit transparency, accountability and disclosure.

Thanks again for this distinct honor and the opportunity to celebrate it with all of you.

Back to work,

Sandy

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Congratulations again, Sandy. Your accomplishment has helped bring us all that one step closer to real legitimacy. Great job!

Well, no. More like real legitimacy as opposed to perceived legitimacy. Too often blogs and bloggers can become 'legends in their own mind', so outside validation like this has specific value.

Absolutely. Don't know what that comment was but I think I'm glad it's deleted. :-)

What I appreciate so much about this is that writers like you understand that Newsvine.com now runs with the best of the best Pacific Northwest media. Newsvine's name is out there and readers are flocking here to see yet another successful example of excellence coming out of Seattle, as Newsvine corporate sits near Lake Union. I tell people about growing up in Seattle's University District during the '60s. Or Haight Asbury north. Then I quote a list of creative giants, usually starting with Jimi Hendrix and Heart, then mentioning Boeing, Microsoft and Starbucks. Then I say "Yeah, it does rain all the time and it's grey and cloudy. So growing up, we had nothing better to do than sit around, drink coffee, think and be creative."
I could go on and on but I need to get back to work.
    Thanks again,
    Sandy

Thanks for posting this Sandy. Ever since your award, I have been keen to find out more about what you had set as your specific objectives. And you have done that very clearly with this post.

Well done for giving a voice to those who have been silenced, sued and retaliated against. And forcing better transparency, accountability and disclosure by such agencies.

We have a Group called Caregivers. It is intended for those who offer care for their own but I think your artcile here is a good example of caregiving in a wider context. Hope you don't mind that I have clipped it there.

TheJonesGirl, Bartleby, Synthesis and Raat, Thank you so much!
As far as being a caregiver goes, I am a wife, Mom and Grandma. My husband and I have been married for 25 years and when he served in the Navy, he'd go on WestPac cruises that lasted over 6 months. This is when our kids were 2, 3 and 6. I was the ship's ombudsman at the time and was the resource that the over 600 wives would call if they had a problem as our husbands were thousands of miles away, protecting our freedoms. But I am a giver anyway. My life goal is to be the richest person in my tribe/ family because I give the most away.
I haven't publicized this yet, but over the past four years, I've not been paid for any of my investigative articles. I am grateful to be of service and let my passion for my work flow out my fingertips. To me, life is about answering the questions "Who am I" and "Why am I here?" I am at a place in my life where I have worked long and hard and can now live my purpose with passion.
There are plans for future books, including an e-book that will include these Shriner articles as well as the ones about my three year investigation into the non profit claims of the International Remote Viewing Association.
I want my e-book to help other people who may "know things" about those who use their public positions of trust for private gain. After Enrom and other corporate scandals, whistleblowers, who now are protected from retaliation by the Sarbanes Oxley act, need to know how to find, follow and document a paper trail that is usually littered with fraud and corruption and, well, may lead to the "f" word. Felonies. Yes, this is very serious stuff and I am mindful of the consequences of my digging. Digging online makes it easy for anyone to find non profit tax returns, state registrations and other filings. Makes documenting online articles very easy. I'd really like to use this experience so I can put together workshops for journalism students who are interested in investigative journalism. Sure, it looks sexy and cool, like Robert Redford when he played Bob Woodward in "All the President's Men." The truth is that masters of this genre pay their dues for years, knowing full well that it's dangerous. Go to the "Committee to Protect Journalists" at http://www.cpj.org/. This is where journalists who have been killed in the line of duty are honored.
On that happy note, thanks again for the nice comments.
    Back to work,
    Sandy

I thought about Kurt Cobain and should mention him and Nirvana as progenitors of Seattle's grunge sound. Did you see the recent VH1 Rock Honors? The band that opened for Ozzy Osbourne, the "Queens of the Stone Age" were wearing flannel shirts, ball caps and what looked like logger boots. My husband and I watched the lead singer belt out "Paranoid" and when the camera pointed to the drummer and his backwards ball cap, I got online and checked to see if they were from Seattle.
    Of course!
Kurt is probably an example of a creative type who may have suffered from the "depressing weather." It doesn't bug me and I think that I kind of thrive in it.
OK. Along with Cobain, I guess I should mention Soundgarten, Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots. And I didn't mention Amazon.com, Nintendo and McCaw cellular as Seattle based business who have done pretty well.
The true motivator for Seattle creative types?
It's all about the coffee, baby.

Well Done, Sandy. I have only just joined Newsvine, but I like what I see. My particular "beef" is an organisation known as "Common Purpose" a so-called Charity involved, (as they put it) in "Adult Education." (Adult and Child brainwashing more like).
Keep up the good work, and I am honoured to be part of this great Website.

Congratulations on the award Sandy. Please be sure you make the Remote Viewing -related URL known to me when it's available; is it out yet? As this was posted some time ago I see (I found it by accident in a search engine looking for something on Kurt Cobaine, funny enough).
