FBI Investigating St. Louis Shriners Hospital Employee Theft

advertisement

KSDK Channel 5 in St. Louis is reporting that the FBI is investigating how thousands were stolen by the former head of the local Shriners Hospital office of fiscal responsibility. The hospital has called for an internal investigation to see how long this might have been going on and will review policies to make sure it won't happen again. The story and video are here.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Sandy,

I have looked at your postings and all you write about is the Shriners. Most of what I have read that was not just copies from other sources is not good reporting. Is it you or the person that is feeding you with the wrong information that has a hate issue?

As I have indicated before, I am not a Shriner. If your stories made sense I would not be making these posts. When I read your stories I see blind rage for the Shriners. From what I see from what you write you will paste anything that looks bad for the Shriners without checking out the statement to see if there is a problem with it. It seems that you are posting out of hate and not on what is the truth.

Most of what I read from you is a twisting of allegations (not the truth) mixed with items that you claim are the truth but when you check them out your truths fall short of really being the truth.

A reporter (this is what you are trying to be) does not make up stories, they investigate being fair and unbiased until they have the facts and only then do they report. A real reporter does not use other reporters stories as if they are their own. Before a real reporter uses any quote as fact they investigate it.

If you are not a Shriner, then why did you refer to yourself in the email sent out to a Shriners' mailing list where you instructed "all brothers" on how to stop me from posting? And, believe it or not, no one feeds me information. I come up with this stuff the old fashioned way. It's called investigative journalism.
Here at Newsvine, which is a hybrid news delivery system, we can "seed" articles to our sites as we see fit.
    This is what I do.
My column provides a public service, Roy. If you read my previous work, you will appreciate how I will make a statement and then link to the pertinent document, such as a tax return, mortgage document or bar association listing. Then the public can read what I write and make up their own mind.
You might want to do the same. If you are so upset with my column, go start your own.
Then you can turn your own Lemons into lemonade.
    Sandy

Thank you for your comments. Again, please read the findings reported in "Two Years On." Do not mistake passion for anger. I write with passion. Great passion.
And I do so without apology.
I have my own point of view which is different than yours. And, yes, I do report the news and editorialize from a certain point of view. All journalists do. What I do is called "watchdog journalism."
If I seem immersed in the story, it's because the Shriners made me part of the story when they named me as a secondary party of interest after they sued two whistle blowers for defamation. What kind of a non profit group uses charitable donations to silence critics and tries to circumvent reporter shield laws?
The Shriners have an impossible reputation to live up to. They have worked for decades convincing the world that they are the world's greatest philanthropy. As such, this also implies that they are the world's greatest non profit group. There is a huge disconnect between these two claims as the Shriners seem to suffer from not only financial mismanagement, but also from a serious lack of corporate oversight, as this article, attributed to KDSK news, so clearly illustrates. Such failures point to an equally serious lack of non profit accountability, transparency and disclosure. For this, the Shriners are answerable to the IRS. If non profit and/or other laws are violated, I'm sure you will agree that they must be held accountable, as is the case with the recent prostitution scandals. What if the FBI finds that tax-deductible contributions paid for Buffalo Jesters'prostitutes or went toward paying for the Brazilian fishing trip that is now part of an international investigation into child sex tourism?
Could it be that the Shriners suffer from such a serious lack of oversight that the FBI is now investigating crimes associated with both their fraternity and charity? Is it because their leaders are a bunch of Jesters?
Oversight by law enforcement is no way to run a corporation, non profit or otherwise.
Feel free to become a Newsvine columnist and cover the news as you see it.
And thank you for embracing journalistic diversity by allowing me the freedom to report the news as I see it. Anything less amounts to intolerance.
Just because I am different does not make me wrong. Sandy
